Discover Sri Lanka

An 11-day Sri Lanka round tour — capital city, fishing coast, dolphins, mountain wind and tea country.

Overview

This 11-day Sri Lanka round tour circles the island the long way. It opens in Colombo and Negombo, runs north to the dolphin waters at Kalpitiya, crosses east to the coral fort at Trincomalee, then climbs into the Knuckles and the tea hills around Nuwara Eliya before dropping to the beaches at Bentota.

At a Glance

Take a look at this example travel flow to understand the pace and experiences included in this trip.

Day 1: Colombo

Start in the capital, which is louder and more layered than most people expect. Galle Face Green at dusk is where the whole city turns up.

Day 2: Negombo

North along the coast to a fishing town built around a lagoon and a network of Dutch canals. Get to the fish market early or don’t bother.

Day 3: Kalpitiya

Further up the peninsula, where the dolphins come in pods of hundreds rather than handfuls, and the lagoon is flat enough to learn to kitesurf on.

Day 4: Trincomalee

East to the deep-water harbour. Fort Frederick is coral stone, still garrisoned, and full of deer that have long since stopped caring about visitors.

Day 5: Riverston (Riverstone)

Up into the Knuckles massif, where the wind does not stop and the cloud sits below you rather than above. Mini World’s End is the short walk with the big payoff.

Day 6: Nuwara Eliya (“Little England”) & Gregory Lake

Tea country, and a town that never quite stopped being Edwardian — red-brick post office, clipped hedges, and a lake with pedal boats shaped like swans.

Day 7: Lover’s Leap Falls

A short walk through tea estates to a waterfall with a legend attached, and an afternoon with nothing more demanding than a park or a tea factory.

Day 8: Bomburu Ella (Bomuru Falls)

Thirty to forty-five minutes on foot through forest and village paths, following a stream up to one of the widest multi-tiered falls on the island.

Day 9: Bentota Beach

Down to the southwest coast, where the sand is wide and golden and the day’s agenda is dinner.

Day 10: Bentota River Safari & Water Sports

The river behind the beach runs through mangrove, and the water is calm enough for everything from a slow boat to a wakeboard.

Day 11: Return to Colombo & Departure
